Introduction: Over the past decade, Corynebacterium striatum (C. striatum), an emerging multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogen, has significantly challenged healthcare settings, especially those involving individuals with weakened immune systems. The rise of these superbugs necessitates innovative solutions. Methods: This study aimed to isolate and characterize bacteriophages targeting MDR-C. striatum. Utilizing 54 MDR-C. striatum isolates from a local hospital as target strains, samples were collected from restroom puddles for phage screening. Dot Plaque and Double-layer plate Assays were employed for screening. Results: A novel temperate bacteriophage, named CSP1, was identified through a series of procedures, including purification, genome extraction, sequencing, and one-step growth curves. CSP1 possesses a 39,752 base pair circular double-stranded DNA genome with HK97-like structural proteins and potential for site-specific recombination. It represents a new species within the unclassified Caudoviricetes class, as supported by transmission electron microscopy, genomic evolutionary analysis, and collinearity studies. Notably, CSP1 infected and lysed 21 clinical MDR-C. striatum isolates, demonstrating a wide host range. The phage remained stable in conditions ranging from -40 to 55°C, pH 4 to 12, and in 0.9% NaCl buffer, showing no cytotoxicity. Discussion: The identification of CSP1 as the first phage targeting clinical C. striatum strains opens new possibilities in bacteriophage therapy research, and the development of diagnostic and therapeutic tools against pathogenic bacteria.

In order to discover novel protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibitors with excellent herbicidal activity, a series of structurally novel 6-(pyridin-2-yl) benzothiazole derivatives were designed based on the scaffold hopping strategy. The in vitro experiments demonstrated that the newly synthesized compounds exhibited noteworthy inhibitory activity against Arabidopsis thaliana PPO (AtPPO), with IC50 values ranging from 0.06 to 1.36 µM. Preliminary postemergence herbicidal activity tests and crop safety studies indicated that some of our compounds exhibited excellent herbicidal activity and crop safety. For instance, compound (rac)-7as exhibited superior herbicidal activities to commercially available flumioxazin (FLU) and saflufenacil (SAF) at all the tested concentrations and showed effective herbicidal activities even at a dosage as low as 18.75 g ai/ha. Meanwhile, compound (rac)-7as showed good crop safety for wheat at a dosage as high as 150 g of ai/ha. Although the absolute configuration of compound 7as has no obvious effect on its herbicidal activity, compound (R)-7as showed a slightly higher crop safety than compound (S)-7as. Molecular simulation studies of Nicotiana tabacum PPO (NtPPO) and our candidate compounds showed that the benzothiazole moiety of compounds (R)-7as or (S)-7as formed multiple π-π stacking interactions with FAD, and the pyridine ring generated π-π stacking with Phe-392. Our finding proved that the pyridyl-benzothiazol hybrids are promising scaffolds for the development of PPO-inhibiting herbicides.

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasound-guided thoracic paravertebral block (UTPB) is widely used for postoperative analgesia in thoracic surgery. However, it has many disadvantages. Thoracoscopy-guided thoracic paravertebral block (TTPB) is a new technique for thoracic paravertebral block (TPB). In this study, we compared the use of TTPB and UTPB for pain management after thoracoscopic radical surgery for lung cancer. METHODS: In total, 80 patients were randomly divided 1:1 into the UTPB group and the TTPB group. The surgical time of TPB, the success rate of the first puncture, block segment range, visual analog scale (VAS) scores at 2, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h post operation, and the incidence of postoperative adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The surgical time of TPB was significantly shorter in the TTPB group than in the UTPB group (2.2 ± 0.3 vs. 5.7 ± 1.7 min, t = - 12.411, P < 0.001). The success rate of the first puncture and the sensory block segment were significantly higher in the TTPB group than in the UTPB group (100% vs. 76.9%, χ2 = 8.309, P < 0.001; 6.5 ± 1.2 vs. 5.1 ± 1.3 levels, t = - 5.306, P < 0.001, respectively). The VAS scores were significantly higher during rest and coughing at 48 h post operation than at 2, 6, 12, and 24 h post operation in the TTPB group. The VAS scores were significantly lower during rest and coughing at 12 and 24 h post operation in the TTPB group than in the UTPB group (rest: 2.5 ± 0.4 vs. 3.4 ± 0.6, t = 7.325, P < 0.001; 2.5 ± 0.5 vs. 3.5 ± 0.6, t = 7.885, P < 0.001; coughing: 3.4 ± 0.6 vs. 4.2 ± 0.7, t = 5.057, P < 0.001; 3.4 ± 0.6 vs. 4.2 ± 0.8, t = 4.625, P < 0.001, respectively). No significant difference was observed in terms of postoperative adverse reactions between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with UTPB, TTPB shows advantages, such as simpler and more convenient surgery, shorter surgical time, a higher success rate of the first puncture, wider block segments, and superior analgesic effect. TTPB can effectively reduce postoperative pain due to thoracoscopic lung cancer radical surgery. The development of cost-effective and anti-coking catalysts for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is crucial. Here, non-noble metal-incorporated Ni-based catalysts (Ni3M, M = Sc, Ti, V, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Ga, Zr, Nb, Mo, In, Sn) were employed in the PDH process. The introduction of V, Nb, and Mo, with their strong carbon binding ability, created unique Ni-M cooperative sites, enhancing the catalytic performance. Other non-noble metals influenced the electronic structure of Ni, affecting the overall catalytic behavior. V and Nb exhibited a balanced combination of activity, selectivity, and stability, making them potential catalyst candidates. Microkinetic simulations revealed that Ni3V and Ni3Nb displayed high selectivity toward olefins with low apparent activation energies. This study emphasizes the significance of bimetallic synergy in enhancing PDH performance and provides new directions for the development of efficient alkane dehydrogenation catalyst development.

Introduction: The cost-effectiveness study of syphilis screening in pregnant women has not been synthesized. This study aimed to synthesize the economic evidence on the cost-effectiveness of syphilis screening in pregnant women that might contribute to making recommendations on the future direction of syphilis screening approaches. Methods: We systematically searched MEDLINE, PubMed, and Web of Science databases for relevant studies published before 19 January 2023 and identified the cost-effectiveness analyses for syphilis screening in pregnant women. The methodological design quality was appraised by the Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS) 2022 checklist. Results: In total, 17 literature met the eligibility criteria for a full review. Of the 17 studies, four evaluated interventions using different screening methods, seven assessed a combination of syphilis testing and treatment interventions, three focused on repeat screening intervention, and four evaluated the interventions that integrated syphilis and HIV testing. The most cost-effective strategy appeared to be rapid syphilis testing with high treatment rates in pregnant women who were positive. Discussion: The cost-effectiveness of syphilis screening for pregnancy has been widely demonstrated. It is very essential to improve the compliance with maternal screening and the treatment rates for positive pregnant women while implementing screening.

Genes involved in melanin production directly impact insect pigmentation and can affect diverse physiology and behaviours. The role these genes have on sex behaviour, however, is unclear. In the present study, the crucial melanin pigment gene black was functionally characterised in an urban pest, the German cockroach, Blattella germanica. RNAi knockdown of B. germanica black (Bgblack) had no effect on survival, but did result in black pigmentation of the thoraxes, abdomens, heads, wings, legs, antennae, and cerci due to cuticular accumulation of melanin. Sex-specific variation in the pigmentation pattern was apparent, with females exhibiting darker coloration on the abdomen and thorax than males. Bgblack knockdown also resulted in wing deformation and negatively impacted the contact sex pheromone-based courtship behaviour of males. This study provides evidence for black function in multiple aspects of B. germanica biology and opens new avenues of exploration for novel pest control strategies.

Depression is a major chronic mental illness worldwide, characterized by anhedonia and pessimism. Exposed to the same stressful stimuli, some people behave normally, while others exhibit negative behaviors and psychology. The exact molecular mechanisms linking stress-induced depressive susceptibility and resilience remain unclear. Connexin 43 (Cx43) forms gap junction channels between the astrocytes, acting as a crucial role in the pathogenesis of depression. Cx43 dysfunction could lead to depressive behaviors, and depression down-regulates the expression of Cx43 in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Besides, accumulating evidence indicates that inflammation is one of the most common pathological features of the central nervous system dysfunction. However, the roles of Cx43 and peripheral inflammation in stress-susceptible and stress-resilient individuals have rarely been investigated. Thus, animals were classified into the chronic unpredictable stress (CUS)-susceptible group and the CUS-resilient group based on the performance of behavioral tests following the CUS protocol in this study. The protein expression of Cx43 in the PFC, the Cx43 functional changes in the PFC, and the expression levels including interleukin (IL)-1ß, tumor necrosis factor-α, IL-6, IL-2, IL-10, and IL-18 in the peripheral serum were detected. Here, we found that stress exposure triggered a significant reduction in Cx43 protein expression in the CUS-susceptible mice but not in the CUS-resilient mice accompanied by various Cx43 phosphorylation expression and the changes of inflammatory signals. Stress resilience is associated with Cx43 in the PFC and fluctuation in inflammatory signaling, showing that therapeutic targeting of these pathways might promote stress resilience.

OBJECTIVES: To build self-supervised foundation models for multicontrast MRI of the whole brain and evaluate their efficacy in assisting diagnosis of brain tumors. METHODS: In this retrospective study, foundation models were developed using 57,621 enhanced head MRI scans through self-supervised learning with a pretext task of cross-contrast context restoration with two different content dropout schemes. Downstream classifiers were constructed based on the pretrained foundation models and fine-tuned for brain tumor detection, discrimination, and molecular status prediction. Metrics including accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the ROC curve (AUC) were used to evaluate the performance. Convolutional neural networks trained exclusively on downstream task data were employed for comparative analysis. RESULTS: The pretrained foundation models demonstrated their ability to extract effective representations from multicontrast whole-brain volumes. The best classifiers, endowed with pretrained weights, showed remarkable performance with accuracies of 94.9, 92.3, and 80.4%, and corresponding AUC values of 0.981, 0.972, and 0.852 on independent test datasets in brain tumor detection, discrimination, and molecular status prediction, respectively. The classifiers with pretrained weights outperformed the convolutional classifiers trained from scratch by approximately 10% in terms of accuracy and AUC across all tasks. The saliency regions in the correctly predicted cases are mainly clustered around the tumors. Classifiers derived from the two dropout schemes differed significantly only in the detection of brain tumors. CONCLUSIONS: Foundation models obtained from self-supervised learning have demonstrated encouraging potential for scalability and interpretability in downstream brain tumor-related tasks and hold promise for extension to neurological diseases with diffusely distributed lesions. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The application of our proposed method to the prediction of key molecular status in gliomas is expected to improve treatment planning and patient outcomes. Additionally, the foundation model we developed could serve as a cornerstone for advancing AI applications in the diagnosis of brain-related diseases.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is a crucial RNA modification that regulates diverse biological processes in human cells, but its co-transcriptional deposition and functions remain poorly understood. Here, we identified the RNA helicase DDX21 with a previously unrecognized role in directing m6A modification on nascent RNA for co-transcriptional regulation. DDX21 interacts with METTL3 for co-recruitment to chromatin through its recognition of R-loops, which can be formed co-transcriptionally as nascent transcripts hybridize onto the template DNA strand. Moreover, DDX21's helicase activity is needed for METTL3-mediated m6A deposition onto nascent RNA following recruitment. At transcription termination regions, this nexus of actions promotes XRN2-mediated termination of RNAPII transcription. Disruption of any of these steps, including the loss of DDX21, METTL3, or their enzymatic activities, leads to defective termination that can induce DNA damage. Therefore, we propose that the R-loop-DDX21-METTL3 nexus forges the missing link for co-transcriptional modification of m6A, coordinating transcription termination and genome stability.

Layered transition metal oxides (NaxTMO2) possess attractive features such as large specific capacity, high ionic conductivity, and a scalable synthesis process, making them a promising cathode candidate for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, NaxTMO2 suffer from multiple phase transitions and Na+/vacancy ordering upon Na+ insertion/extraction, which is detrimental to their electrochemical performance. Herein, we developed a novel cathode material that exhibits an abnormal P2-type structure at a stoichiometric content of Na up to 1. The cathode material delivers a reversible capacity of 108 mA h g-1 at 0.2C and 97 mA h g-1 at 2C, retaining a capacity retention of 76.15% after 200 cycles within 2.0-4.3 V. In situ diffraction studies demonstrated that this material exhibits an absolute solid-solution reaction with a low volume change of 0.8% during cycling. This near-zero-strain characteristic enables a highly stabilized crystal structure for Na+ storage, contributing to a significant improvement in battery performance. Overall, this work presents a simple yet effective approach to realizing high Na content in P2-type layered oxides, offering new opportunities for high-performance SIB cathode materials.

Vertebrobasilar artery dissecting aneurysms (VBDAs) are the most surgically challenging type of aneurysm. Cerebral revascularization is the ultimate treatment for complex VBDAs. We retrospectively analysed the characteristics, surgical outcomes and follow-up data of 21 patients who underwent cerebral revascularization to treat complex VBDAs from 2015 to 2022. According to the location of the aneurysm and the anatomic relationship between the VBDA and the PICA, VBDA patients were classified into four groups: aneurysms located at the VA with PICA involvement (10 patients), aneurysms located at the VA without PICA involvement (1 patient), aneurysms located at the basilar apex segment (1 patient) and aneurysms located at the basilar trunk segment (9 patients). A surgical algorithm for complex VBDAs was determined primarily by the location of the aneurysm, the status of the aneurysm and the ability of retrograde blood flow to reach the proximal vertebrobasilar artery. Surgical modalities for patients with aneurysms in the VA with PICA involvement included low-flow (OA-PICA) bypasses with aneurysm trapping, aneurysm excision or reconstructive clip in 8 patients and STA-PCA bypass combined with PICA preservation and aneurysm trapping in 2 patients. In patients with aneurysms in the VA without PICA involvement, aneurysm excision was performed without cerebral bypass. In patients with aneurysms in the basilar apex segment, high-flow bypass (ECA-RA-P2) with aneurysm trapping was performed. In patients with aneurysms in the basilar trunk segment, surgical modalities included high-flow bypasses (ECA-RA-P2 and LVA-RA-P2) with aneurysm trapping or proximal occlusion in 6 patients, ECA-RA-P2 bypass with partial proximal occlusion in 1 patient, ECA-RA-P2 bypass alone in 1 patient, and STA-PCA bypass with R-VA narrowing in 1 patient. Of the 21 patients, 20 experienced clinical improvement or no change, and 17 of 21 patients achieved favourable functional outcomes (mRS ≤ 2). However, one patient died of infarction and respiratory failure postoperatively. Aneurysms were completely obliterated in 13 patients, shrank in 5 patients and stabilized in 2 patients. The median follow-up period was 32.5 months. During the follow-up period, all bypasses were patent, and further clinical improvement was observed in 11 patients. Cerebral revascularization appears to be safe and effective for the treatment of complex VBDAs, and cerebral revascularization could act as a complementary treatment strategy.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are known environmental contaminants with immunosuppressive properties. Their connection to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a condition influenced by the immune system, is not well studied. This research explores the association between PFAS exposure and RA prevalence. METHODS: This research utilized data from the NHANES, encompassing a sample of 10,496 adults from the 2003-2018 cycles, focusing on serum levels of several PFAS. The presence of RA was determined based on self-reports. This study used multivariable logistic regression to assess the relationship between individual PFAS and RA risk, adjusting for covariates to calculate odds ratios (ORs). The combined effects of PFAS mixtures were evaluated using BKMR, WQS regression, and quantile g-computation. Additionally, sex-specific associations were explored through stratified analysis. RESULTS: Higher serum PFOA (OR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.79, 0.98), PFHxS (OR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.83, 1.00), PFNA (OR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.77, 0.98), and PFDA (OR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.81, 0.99) concentration was related to lower odds of RA. Sex-specific analysis in single chemical models indicated the significant inverse associations were only evident in females. BKMR did not show an obvious pattern of RA estimates across PFAS mixture. The outcomes of sex-stratified quantile g-computation demonstrated that an increase in PFAS mixture was associated with a decreased odds of RA in females (OR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.62, 0.92). We identified a significant interaction term of the WQS*sex in the 100 repeated hold out WQS analysis. Notably, a higher concentration of the PFAS mixture was significantly associated with reduced odds of RA in females (mean OR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.88, 0.98). CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates potential sex-specific associations of exposure to various individual PFAS and their mixtures with RA. Notably, the observed inverse relationships were statistically significant in females but not in males. These findings contribute to the growing body of evidence indicating that PFAS may have immunosuppressive effects.

In Vehicular Edge Computing Network (VECN) scenarios, the mobility of vehicles causes the uncertainty of channel state information, which makes it difficult to guarantee the Quality of Service (QoS) in the process of computation offloading and the resource allocation of a Vehicular Edge Computing Server (VECS). A multi-user computation offloading and resource allocation optimization model and a computation offloading and resource allocation algorithm based on the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) are proposed to address this problem. Firstly, the problem is modeled as a Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) problem according to the optimization objective of minimizing the total system delay. Then, in response to the large state space and the coexistence of discrete and continuous variables in the action space, a reinforcement learning algorithm based on DDPG is proposed. Finally, the proposed method is used to solve the problem and compared with the other three benchmark schemes. Compared with the baseline algorithms, the proposed scheme can effectively select the task offloading mode and reasonably allocate VECS computing resources, ensure the QoS of task execution, and have a certain stability and scalability. Simulation results show that the total completion time of the proposed scheme can be reduced by 24-29% compared with the existing state-of-the-art techniques.

Treating severe peripheral nerve injuries is difficult. Nerve repair with conduit small gap tubulization is a treatment option but still needs to be improved. This study aimed to assess the use of microgels containing growth factors, along with chitosan-based conduits, for repairing nerves. Using the water-oil emulsion technique, microgels of methacrylic alginate (AlgMA) that contained vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were prepared. The effects on rat Schwann cells (RSC96) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were evaluated. Chitosan-based conduits were fabricated and used in conjunction with microgels containing two growth factors to treat complete neurotmesis in rats. The results showed that the utilization of dual growth factor microgels improved the migration and decreased the apoptosis of RSC96 cells while promoting the growth and formation of tubes in HUVECs. The utilization of dual growth factor microgels and chitosan-based conduits resulted in notable advancements in the regeneration and myelination of nerve fibers, recovery of neurons, alleviation of muscle atrophy and recovery of neuromotor function and nerve conduction. In conclusion, the use of dual growth factor AlgMA microgels in combination with chitosan-based conduits has the potential to significantly improve the effectiveness of nerve repair.

The past century has witnessed a large number of reports on the Z/E isomerization of alkenes. However, the vast majority of them are still limited to the isomerization of di- and tri-substituted alkenes. The stereospecific Z/E isomerization of tetrasubstituted alkenes remains to be an underdeveloped area, thus lacking in a stereodivergent synthesis of axially chiral alkenes. Herein we report the atroposelective synthesis of tetrasubstituted alkene analogues by asymmetric allylic substitution-isomerization, followed by their Z/E isomerization via triplet energy transfer photocatalysis. In this regard, the stereodivergent synthesis of axially chiral N-vinylquinolinones is achieved efficiently. Mechanistic studies indicate that the benzylic radical generation and distribution are two key factors for preserving the enantioselectivities of axially chiral compounds.

Previous findings showed that anthocyanins from Lycium ruthenicum Murray (ACN) reduced HFD-induced hypercholesterolemia by regulating gut microbiota, but the mechanism has not been fully understood. The objective of this research was to know whether the cholesterol-lowering impact of ACN in HFD-induced ApoE-/- mice is related to the gut microbiota-bile acid (BA) metabolism. Twenty-four male ApoE-/- mice were divided into three groups: the Control group, the HFD group, and the HFD + ACN group. Here, we showed that ACN intervention reduced HFD-induced body weight serum concentrations of TC and LDL-C and ameliorated lipid accumulation in the liver and adipose tissues. Besides, ACN altered gut microbiota composition in HFD-fed ApoE-/- mice. Moreover, UHPLC-MS/MS analysis revealed that ACN intervention significantly increased the ratio of conjugated to unconjugated BAs in feces induced by HFD, attributed to the increase in conjugated BAs and decrease in unconjugated BAs. Finally, the correlation analysis indicated that the above changes in fecal BA profile were linked with an increase in Bifidobacterium, Allobaculum and a decrease in Ileibacterium, Helicobacter, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, Blautia, Odoribacter, and Colidextribacter. In summary, ACN could alleviate HFD-induced hypercholesterolemia in ApoE-/- mice, which was associated with the improvement of gut microbiota and modulation of fecal BA profile.

Ni-rich layered materials LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 attracts extensive interest to build high-performance lithium-ion batteries, but ground challenges, e.g., unfavorable phase transfer and interfacial parasitic reactions during cycling, especially after being exposure to the air for a long time, greatly limit their practical utilization. Here, we prove that those issues of Ni-rich layered materials can be alleviated by concurrently incorporating the Al3+ and PO34-, and conduct corresponding comprehensive studies to explore mechanisms of the enhanced electrochemical performances. It is suggested that the phase transition (H2 to H3) that related to the lattice contraction can be suppressed after Al3+ and PO34- co-doping, leading to improved cycling stability. Additionally, the co-doping successfully mitigates the chemical reaction between the Ni-based oxides and the ambient air, significantly improving the reversibility of lithium intercalation and charge transfer kinetics against long-time storage. Specifically, the Al3+ and PO34- co-doped material maintains 94.1% capacity retention of 150 cycles before storage, and 73.6% capacity retention of 100 cycles after being stored in ambient air for 30 days, which is much better than that of the undoped one.

Vertical static composting is an efficient and convenient technology for the treatment of food waste. Exploring the impact of oxygen concentration levels on microbial community structure and functional stability is crucial for optimizing ventilation technology. This study set three experimental groups with varying ventilation intensities based on self-made alternating ventilation composting reactor (AL2: 0.2 L·kg-1 DM·min-1; AL4: 0.4 L·kg-1 DM·min-1; AL6: 0.6 L·kg-1 DM·min-1) to explore the optimal alternating ventilation rate. The results showed that the cumulative ammonia emission of AL2 group reduced by 25.13% and 12.59% compared to the AL4 and AL6 groups. The humification degree of the product was 1.18 times and 1.25 times higher than the other two groups. AL2 increased the relative abundance of the core species Saccharomonospora, thereby strengthening microbial interaction. Low-intensity alternating ventilation increased the carbon metabolism levels, especially aerobic_chemoheterotrophy, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. However, it simultaneously reduced nitrogen metabolism. Structural equation model analysis demonstrated that alternating low-intensity ventilation effectively regulated both microbial diversity (0.81, p<0.001) and metabolism (0.81, p<0.001) by shaping the composting environment. This study optimized the intensity of alternating ventilation and revealed the regulatory mechanism of community structure and metabolism. This study provides guidance for achieving efficient and low-consumption composting.

Recovering gold from wastewater has both economic and environmental benefits. However, how to effectively recover it is challenging. In this work, a novel Fe-based metal-organic framework (MOF) was synthesized and decorated with 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid to have a well-developed porous architecture to effectively recover Au(III) from water. The maximum Au(III) sorption capacity by the finally-synthesized porous material MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA reached 2350 mg/g at pH = 6.00 ± 0.15, which is one of the highest among all literature-reported relevant materials including MOFs, and high sorption strength can be maintained within a wide pH range from 2.0 to 10.0. Besides, Au(III) sorption efficiency at low concentrations (i.e., 3.5 × 104 mg/mL) reached over 99%. Mechanically, outstanding Au(III) sorption by MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA resulted from the O/N/S-containing moieties on its surface, large surface area and porosity. The N- and S-containing functionalities (CS, CONH) served as electron donors to chelate Au(III). The O-containing (FeOFe, COFe, COOH, and coordinated H2O) and N-containing (CONH) moieties on MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA interacted with OH groups on the hydrolyzed species of Au(III) (AuCl3(OH)-, AuCl2(OH)2-, and AuCl(OH)3-) by hydrogen bond, which further increased Au(III) sorption. Furthermore, about 45.71% of Au(III) was reduced to gold nanoparticles by CS groups on the decorated 2,5-dithiophene dicarboxylic acid during sorption on MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA. Over 98.35% of Au(III) was selectively sorbed on MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA at pH 4.0, much higher than that of the coexisting heavy metal ions including Cu(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), and Ni(II) (< 5%), despite their same concentration at 0.01 mg/mL. Although sorption selectivity of a noble metal Pt(IV) by MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA is relatively poor (68.23%), it could be acceptable. Moreover, reusability of MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA is also excellent, since above 90.5% Au(III) still can be sorbed after two sorption-desorption cycles. Overall, excellent sorption performance and the roughly-calculated gold recycling benefits (26.30%) highlight that MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA is a promising porous material for gold recovery from the aqueous phase.
